So my last tank (zeovit driven) crashed at the beginning of 2013. I went away for a long weekend, and came home to a return pump that did not turn back on after a power failure. Zeovit plus no return= a big problem.

Anyway, I got married and bought a house in the interim so my interests have been elsewhere. However, the bug has bitten (pleasantly enough, my wife asked me to setup again as she wants a tank to entertain the cats). So this is where I am at:

I bought a stand ages ago (meranti cladding done really nicely) and had george build me the display. He did a great job. The specs are as follows:

    - Tank is 600 long x 500 wide by 480 high. Coast to coast slimline overflow (ordered). Water level is at 450
    - Lighting= 6x24 W ATI Dimmable sunpower. 3x blue plus. 2x coral plus. 1x aquablue special
    - Skimmer= Bubble Magus NAC 5 cone
    - Flow= Mix of Tunze and Vortech MP10
    - Return= Sicce
    - ATO= Reef Octopus
    - Cooling= Tunze Aquawind
    - Heating= Sicce
    - I also have a Reef Octopus reactor in there with a bit of matrix and carbon
    - UPS= being delivered sometime over the next few weeks.

The rock is marco rock and the substrate is a mixture of aragalive and fiji pink.
I generally run probiotic systems, and Im wanting something rather simple on this tank, so Ive reverted to my old favourite from a few years back- prodibio. Have used the prodibio cycling product and will use bioclean etc as per recommendations. Tank is currently just starting to cycle.

This is going to be an sps and clam dominated tank trying to be as easy on nature as possible. So everything will be grown from frags (except of course the clams- I havent figured out how to frag those yet), which is fine- Ive learnt patience.

Looks good, I love your aquascape (especially the little bridge between the two structures) :)

Forgot to mention, I will put some backing on at some point. The overflow is tinted glass (Georges idea) which works rather well, but I can still see the back plumbing. Not a trainsmash and Ill sort it out at some point.

that thick black pipe in the sump picture. Is that the bottom end of your overflow pipe?

Is it smooth inside? Or also ribbed? If ribbed, does it generate a noise at all?

I have a need to use a flexible pipe as downpipe, but years ago I did use a pool cleaner hose. That did give of the noise of running water.

@RiaanP Correct, thats exactly what it is. The vortech makes more noise than the overflow. If that helps you?

It is ribbed on the inside as well

Added a few kilos of mature live rock from a friends tank... as well as 2 cups of his tanks sand to try and get the tank seeded nicely. Ive also started with the prodibio programme.

First round of tests from last week... 2 days before the live rock and sand was added

Anyway first round of tests in. I forgot how much I hate the child proof lids that the red sea kits use.

    Alk 7.6
    Ca 420
    Mg 1360 ish
    Ph 8.2
    Sg 1.025
    Nitrates between 5 and 10

    Temp is 28

No plans to use a chiller. I have a tunze aquawind which I havent unboxed yet.... and I generally like my temp around 26 so I reckon it should do the job.

However, if all else fails, the room is airconned. I just wanted to see what it would get to on a hot day (was 32 outside that day)

Ag, 28 isnt ridiculously worrisome in a tank that is cycling. I will worry more once I prepare to stock.
