    Hi Guys,

I was wondering what would be a rough estimate on a montly basis ( RRR) be for maintaining a 900l to 1000l tank. Just maintenace not stock.

Approximately a R1000 for salt and additives, once a year bulbs will need replacing which is dependant on how much/many bulbs you intend having. Other than that just fish food.

How long is a piece of string? It all depends on what you feed your tank (what fish you are keeping), how often you do water changes and what salt you use. Depending on the corals you keep you will have to add supplements, some coral use more than others. Really difficult to give figures. Do you factor in electricity in this cost, causer this will be dependent on lights which is dependent on what corals you want to keep.?

    I run a 900lt tank and electricity for 2 x 400w Metal Halides + 4 x 54w Actinics and pumps + Chiller costs about R1100
Food probably R150 a month - I make my own frozen mix
I live at the coast and collect water from Umhloti beach so you have to factor in salt and R.O water.

When I had my last setup in PMB, roughly 500litres, a box of real ocean salt lasted me about 3 months if I do a 10% water change weekly. At R600 a box, that's R200/m for salt. I have my own RO unit.
I ran a natural system, in other words I had live rock, a DSB and chaeto as filtration. I never dosed anything other than kalkwasser. Not sure what the electricity bill for the tank was.
Fish food wasn't much as a tin of Omega lasts very long. I did give frozen mysis every second night, but that didn't work out more than R20-40/m.
Some guys dose a hell of a lot of additives which I think is sometimes overkill or unnecessary and costs a load each month ;)

    Quick summary

    800L system.
    Lights: 2*250MH for 10hours a day : R150
    Lights: 2*54W T5 for 12hours a day :R38.88
    Return pump 145W :R104.40
    Skimmer pump @ 40W :R28.80
Internal sunsun pumps total 48W :34.56

    Total electriciy @ 6 2c per KW :221.11

Salt for waterchanges (10% a week) 12.8kg a month. 25Kg of tropic marine pro reef salt is R1300. So that is 650 a month.

Total of R870 a month. Excluding food and additives.

Yes there is cheaper salts and less water changes but once again it all depends on how you run your tank.

In Pretoria we are paying 62/kwh, Witbank is 65c/kwh. So i guess prepaid is more , why ??

prepaid is more as the "usage" is governed to a limit, so there for they make it a premium

I installed pre-paid in my rental homes - tenants say now they actually pay less????

Might be because they monitor it them selfs now?

It is a free country ;) municipalities can dictate the costs in their own area + outlying area or perceived expensive area's might pay more:(

    Just a joke
