    Hi everyone,

I'm looking to replace the very small sump that came with my 6-foot tank. I do have a spare 4-foot glass tank, but there's no way I'm getting that tank under the big one. I't s already got water and live rock in, so emptying it out and so on is not an option.

My other solution is to have a modular sump built (or DIY the build).

Here is a pic of what I have in mind, all comments appreciated:

I plan to have a 15cm sandbed with about 10cm water over it. Perhaps some cheato or other algea in there as well?

I found a cool site to help with the planning:

    The Skimmer/Inlet Chamber:

    The DSB/Fuge:

I was also thinking of having a reservoir for auto top-up, but space is a bit limited because I have a chiller in the cabinet as well. What about making do with manual top ups and eventually plumb the chiller so that it stands outside , then I'll have a space of about 45cm x 45 cm for a decent sized RO reservoir. No point in having a small reservoir that needs to be topped up every day or two.

It is extremely difficult to connect tanks like that.

I guess lining up the holes exactly is the biggest challenge. What else should I keep in mind?

Let the first sump waterfall over to the next.
    No connections to leak.
Just guild a glass gutter thing...

Thanks for the advice Riaan! After chatting with you I've started messing about with some ideas in sketchup:
