    hi guys:)

Today i have set up my refugeium:thumbup: but i just want to know, Sand dollars? are they safe to have in a DSB?, i just want ur opinions. Also i bought some agronite sand.. that costs a  load:( and i see that the DSB is only 2-(2.5/3) inches deep, I want to increase it to about 5 but i dont want to pay that much again;) so? is it ok if i mix substrate? will it have a inpact on the quality? of the agronite??. If not what can i use that is cheap and easy to get? i was thinking pool sand or play sand but i hear stuf about sillica or something.:(

You can use playsand, just wash it very well until white. You can mix different types of sand, but not too course as it might trap detritus and have a negative impact on the anaerobic area in the DSB, in other words the low oxygen zone. You don't want oxygen rich water to penetrate too deep. That's why a DSB must be from fine sand and about 12-15cm deep.

Any playsand is cool... I got mine from reggies... imo aragonite in the dsb is a huge waste of bucks... rather put it in the DT.. ;)

Playsand although the plastic bag says its washed, means nothing. Wash a little at a time in tap water over and over until its completely clear and white..... then place in the dsb....;)

Just a question. I found a very fine Pfs almost the size of medium beach sand. Would this be OK for a FO system?
