I've bought too little Aragamax and have tonnes of playpen sand available. Can I mix the two without any adverse effects? Must I layer it with the Aragonite on the bottom and playpen sand over that?

Yes, and no..... Yes you can mix it - and no you don't need to layer the sand....

Doesn't bother me if its a mix or not, just wanted to know if there are any issues with mixing. Didn't think there would be....

no issues with mixing, but personally i would use the playsand in the sump and arago in the DT, playsand is smaller and less dense than aragonite and will thus blow around in the current easier than aragonite will

aragonite is round edged, playpen sand is sharp edged, i would put aragonite as a separate entity and playsand as an entity and not mix. keep aragonite till you have enough for your purposes and use playpen sand until then. reasoniingbeing aragonite is expensive but zero value when mixed

I have not been in the hobby for a few years and so a little out of date on some details but I recall some controversy over using sand in marine tanks. If memory serves there was a correlation between the silica that dissolves out of quartz sands (mostly SiO2) and potentially contributes to blooms diatomaceous algae species.

I will have to do a little research again but depending on the tank type is there still some caution suggested? The reason I ask is that I have been considering using washed sand from our local beach here in George. Although it has a high shell content I am a little worried about the sand which I have considered sieving out.
