Oki here is an issue i am having, besides the usuals what else can it be

in the last 9 days i have lost 2 cleaner shrimp large, a regal tang 6cm, and a niger trigger 8cm.

there is no trace of them, no bones or left overs, i have removed 2 small crabs, and i can hear a clicking when feeding and lights out, so maybe a pistol or mantis shrimp.

but the last was sunday night, 1am i saw my nigger, yesterday not a trace?
is it possible for them to be completely eaten in a few hours?

    Suspects:
    Mantis Shrimp
    Pistol shrimp

    my sand anemone
    2 x brittle stars

    other fish?

i am taking the tank down on wed eve to see and will re-setup

    any ideas?

Sounds like a mantis or pistol shrimp. Yes, it can be eaten in a few hours.

Have to tag along on this one.... If my mentor "DallasG" is stumped, it shows that he is still human and not a member of the ichthyology species and is human after all .... :)

what species of bristle stars and how big are they. Not Green bristle stars are they?

A single pistol shrimp would take a while to eat a fish and you would see the body near or in the cave. I would strip that tank soon and have a good look though.

Definitely sounds like the pistol shrimp is the culprit, when I had my 5ft tank many years ago I experienced the same thing, fish and shrimp started to go missing, after moving a couple of rocks I found what was like an elephant graveyard with hermit crab shells and the bones from a recently eaten fish etc. I removed practically all of my rock to get at this pistol shrimp, after he had been removed I suffered no more losses.

Yeah that sounds more like a mantis to me... 8cm trigger is a beast.

Maybe try a coke bottle trap before dismantling the LR.

They are also used to catch bait etc. > same concept

Doubt that it is a pistol shrimp... Even a large one, that would sound like a tank bursting, not just clicking noise, would still not take out an 8cm trigger IMO.

I have a pistol (hitchiker) and I have a very small (3cm) Yasha goby and 5cm Fire Gobies and they even do not get taken out by it...

Pistol shrimp really take pods, and they start nailing them once we feed, because the pods then also come to get some chow...

Mantis shrimp is possible yes, one the size of your thumb might be a bit more dangerous to LS.

But they still would not consume that size fish so quickly.

On both accounts (matnis or pistol) you would see liverock rubble, or clouds of dust puffing up as these dig through your liverock...

I cannot give you an answer as to what it is, but I am really convinced those are your culprates...
