The difference is one is a screw in whilst the other just fits in. The double ended is mainly only 150W and the single ended is normaly 250W and up. The single ended also has UV protection built in where the double ended doesn't.

Really I thought you always had to add the piece of glass in front of a 150W DE MH. How can you tell the difference between UV protected globes and non-UV protected ones...

Depends on what the MH accepts - if you buy a SE, just make sure you buy SE globes

All MH globes have a certain amount of UV protection but each make varies.

It is my theory why some makes give better results than others.

    Double ended MH globes
There is a very large selection of specialists Aquarium globes available. But you pay a hefty price for these. Cheaper Chinese clones are available but tend to degrade very quickly.

    Single ended MH globes
There is a vast array of cheaper bulbs available from the likes of Osram, Venture, Philips etc. Some good results have been had by some of these.

On all accounts you must make sure that the kelvin rating and wattage is suited to your hosts domain.

Another question. Will a 150w MH be enough for my tanks depth of 600mm?

I found 2 MH floodlights 150w lying at my dads. Is it possible i could use these with the correct bulbs and fit them into my hood?

yup that will work caddy. I used floodlights and took them apart and and used the gear inside. All mh 150w have the same control gear. Weather it single ended, double ended or for marine use.

I find the only difference between single and double ended is that double ended is more compact and i also have a double ended with uv protection.:)

You also dont get double ended bigger than 250w although 250w is very rare in ended.
