Not sure if it's normal but my Mg never seems to drop. I've always had between 1280 and 1400 mg without having to dose anything, is this normal? I have been using the Red Sea Reef Foundation A and B for KH ad Ca but just never seem to need to add Mg. I have even bought a new test kit (was using salifert and bought the red sea kit) to confirm the readings.

Why would my Mg be so high/stable without dosing?

Mg is usually kept stable with just water changes. Not too many organisms use it in significant quantities. You generally only need to dose when you have huge amounts of livestock or mangroves (which chew through lots of it).

Since I moved over to using biocubes about a year ago I haven't been doing regular water changes, I think my last one was over 6 months ago. My nitrates and phosphates are really low so haven't seen the need. I do dose Orca Reef Xtrax twice a month, maybe this is what's keeping the Mg up.

The reef xtrax won't add to your mg.
How heavily stocked is your tank? How much coralline algae do you have?
