Hi all, going to hunt for a MH unit this weekend, soooo excited.
Just wanted to ask some questions and hopefully get loads of input from all the lighting Gurus's ;)

I want to do a DIY 150w MH canopy. I currently have no corals of any kind.
I was thinking of getting 14000k bulb ; is there 14000k MH bulbs available for 150w?
or even 20000k.(I want it for aesthetics)
I will be supplementing the MH with either t5's or power savers ; 6500k.
And now the big question ...where?
I know that Builders Warehouse sells MH, but do they sell bulbs of 14000k and 20000k?
I know that SE has a UV filter on the bulb and DE needs a UV filter or tempered glass.
Just don't know witch unit is "better".

Any advise will be very welcome.

Hi Mookz - if you want to go DIY, then I wouldd suggest the following:
    1) go to an electrical shop, or electrical wholesaler (ie. Aurora Lights, ABB or Voltex)
    2) get a 150 watt light fitting (Radiant brand is the most popular/common)
    3) get a 150 watt control gear (Also Radiant brand)
    4) go to "The Lamphouse" - (they are only open in the week - they are located in Woodbridge Business Park, in Koeberg Road, Milnerton - close to "Cash-n-Carry") - ask them for the BLV 14000K double ended 150 watt metal halide globe - last time I bought these, they were R330 each - BUT - REMEMBER TO TAKE CASH - they do NOT have card facilities - they also sell the Sylvania T5's for cheaply (less than R100 each)...

Else - for a COMPLETE 150 watt metal halide unit, including 2 x 24 watt T5's, NAAC sells their single 150 watt unit, for R1700.....

So - for 2 of those, it would be R3400....

    Hope you get this sorted!

    Good luck!

Look up "Venture Lighting" in the Cape phone book. These guys are importers of all types of metal halides, but the owner will sell 10 000K, 14 000K and 20 000K lamps direct to us hobbyists (if he has in stock). MUCH cheaper than any pet shop.

Agree on the Radiant luminairs - get the "mount through the ceiling" type for the 150W DE lamps, they work very well.

    Well no luck today :(.
I phoned a couple of places, drove around found nothing.
I did get a hold of Eagle Lighting and they reckon they have some MH 150w complete units (R630), will be checking them out on Monday.
And i will be visiting Voltex on Monday.

    Holding thumbs!!

Good luck Mookz. Yeah - sorry - I forgot about Eagle Lighting. They have a very big shop in the CPT cbd.

In the new complex next to the N1 (between the M5 and N1 - I think it is something Island) - there's Aurora Lighting. It's from Aurora Lighting where I originally bought my Radiant units.....

Also - many thanks Hennie - I also forgot about Venture Lighting.

BUT - please note - this is ONLY if you want to do DIY. I ended up puchasing units in any case.... I am not that good at DIY :(

And my wife complained that it looked crap (my DIY effort)..... so, I got "caught up" spending a packet on 2 x lighting units (my one is an AquaMedic, and the other - not sure of the brand - which I got from NAAC (the 2nd one)).....

Hey guys. Sorry to crash into this thread and steal it abit, but can The Lighthouse ship up to JHB?

And what is your take with Geisemann MH's? VERY expensive, but is it worth it? Also saw the Reeftek MH's for R700, yet you are talking about R350... So is there a major diffs or is it just the LFS nailing me again? ;)

Didn't get a chance to go find the halide...*sigh* was setting up a new network for a client :(.

Going to be busy setting up networks for the next 2 weeks.
But i will hopefully make time during this week or over the weekend.

Eagle sounds promising, R630 for a complete system, cr@p bulb though but im sure i can always get a good bulb later.

hi mookz, just a bit of my experience with this. i have made myself a 150watt M H. fitting with an E C fitting, so it's single ended. found out afterwards that it would have been much cheaper to get a 250watt intstead. turns out the bulbs for 150 watt is what make them realy expensive. thats from an electriciens view. unless this is not the case marine bulbs. in which case i'm realy interested to learn more

Either one will work, Mookz. The top one is the most common one used.

Ectic....my wife was right you live on the forum lmao.
The second one seems to have a wider angle? or more coverage of light?

I will be making a frame over the tank, with a piece of arched aluminum sheeting to help with reflecting.

Perhaps, but our tanks are normally quite a lot longer than they are wide, and the "better coverage" will probably be wasting some light.

Sheesh, i was quoted for the 150w Metal Halide and control gear R630 ex vat this was on Saturday....and today same shop different rep R868 ex vat ??!!

I might as well buy a complete unit secondhand or wait a month and get a new unit from a LFS *sigh*.

I really get irritated by "fluctuating" prices!!

Or can anyone please advise, is R868 ex vat the going price ?
