    hi guys,

today my mother splashed water on the the glass of our lighting unit and it shattered.
loads of fun pulling bits of what looks like shatterproof type glass(broke into tiny little bits like a car window. none of them were sharp)

i have yet to turn the halide back on as i am unsure if i need to get hold of "special" glass?

do i need to get UV protected glass? or will standard glass be just fine?

is the glass there solely as a splash guard to protect against the actual globe breaking

    any assistance will be great.

i am running a 150W 16000 aqua medic globe on the system
i am unsure if these globes have UV filters in them anyway?

    Thanks in advance!

Most nowadays have UV filters in the globe itself. Some of them do say UV protected on the glass somewhere. IF that is the case the glass sheet was just a splash guard. If your globe is not UV protected a thin sheet of glass will still do the trick if memory serves. I may be wrong though so a guru can comment on the last bit to confirm

Only single ended globes are UV shielded. Double ended not. You need tempered glass as far as I know due to the heat that the globe gives off.

    Thanks guys,

    my globe is double ended.

will tempered glass block the UV?

do i need to block UV?
i ask this as our actinics are in the UV spectrum? ie black lights??

tempered glass will block some uv but not all unless it has a coating , you want some UV but not too much, what kind of unit was the light?
