Come one, come all... my tank needs a good clean

I have been thinking, if there is enough interest, I can try to arrange a visit to the 'varsity - perhaps do some live sand bed exploration using one of their big microscopes... what do you Central South African guys say... Of course, anyone else willing to traven to good old Bloemmies will also be most welcome.

It's coming together - the 'Varsity said it's OK with them, and I just need to tie up a few loose ends... I will confirm arrangements tomorrow (Tuesday) and let everyone know via this thread.

Yes, I have - Dory Pets have been very generous with their discount. I have not posted anything about this yet, as I have not actually been back to the 'Varsity since the day we installed it - I will give a feedback after the visit.

Yup... They will have a video head on one of their research microscopes - perhaps we would be able to record some images - if so, I will gladly post them here on MASA.

The Profs promised us an entertaining afternoon - they will try to identify the little critters for us, and give some "talks" on what we find. I think they will enjoy it as much as we will...

    Report back, for those interested:

We had a very informative meeting/workshop this afternoon. It's a pity that only four of us attended, but that allowed more time for each of us to play with the microscopes.

We all took turns looking at various samples taken from my DLSB and from Ed's refugium. Each microscope slide, with a drop or two of water and sand or algae contained LOTS of life - on one slide we counted about 20 creatures visible under 100x magnification (I think). In another drop of water sampled from deep within my DLSB, there were perhaps 30 or 40 really small things barely visible under 400x, moving around too fast to really see what they were...

The Prof even zoomed in on some bacteria visible on one of the sand grains, although nobody could identify them.

We took some interesting photos, using the digital cameras mounted on the microscopes. The 'varsity will send me a CD with the photos on Monday, and I will try to upload some during the week.

Our thanks to Prof. Liesl van As for her time, and the use of her microscopes - we really appreciate it.
