I don't know if it's just me not finding it but there is no MASA history on this forum. Meaning by MASA history I mean how was MASA created and who did it and all those info some people are just curious about... If there is no Forum can one of the mods maybe create one... PLEEEEEEAAASE!!!! I'm just curious to find out...

viper357 was part of the team on a similar site and decided to go it on his own the rest is inconsequential.

The big guy had it planned many years ago. :)

yup the best thing about MASA is it that it has remaind an open forum. It is not dictated to or run by an individual for financial gains. It is a forum for reefers to share info. Hats of to the mods for keeping it so.

    Brenda - May 2007.....

And it was started by Viper357, DragonReef, and Alan...... Whom all used to be part of another South African marine web-site. But, due to commercialism, it was decided that MASA should be started - to be a true marine-related forum, and a true source of information, to the public.....

Thanks Jacquesb! I began to wonder when MASA started when we hit the 3000 member mark. I was curious as to how long it took to get there. Not long IMO!!!!!

This is basically it in a nut shell, although the reasons for starting the site are not important. I remember that first weekend very well from deciding to go for it on the Friday, working through Friday night and Saturday and having it up and running by Sunday with content[by that stage Dean, Anthony and myself were almost all divorced]. That was a team effort of note. There is how ever one person that never gets mentioned and never complains about it but was very instrumental in setting up the site and still plays an important part in keeping the site running and that is Rory. Rory joined us just hours after we started and helped Dean on the back end and software issues while Anthony and myself wrote up content so that people would have something to read when the site opened.

Infact reading through this maybe a SA forum history might be interesting for some of you.
The first fish forum i remember in SA was a site called Guppies for Yuppies [G4Y] and was a mixed site of fresh water and marine. This was the only forum for aquarists in SA at that stage. Not sure of the dates but was about 2003 - 2004. On that site Cervin[Curveball] was a moderator and Anthony[Dragonreef] was a member and they formed a friendship. They then decided to create a Marine/ Saltwater based forum and in about 2005 SA Reefkeeping[SARK] was born with Cervin[Reefkeeper] and Anthony[Dragonreef] as admin. Dean[Viper] was then invited on as their first Mod [later became Admin] and about 2 months later later i was invited on as the second mod. Sunday nights in those days were very interesting with only 150-200 odd members. Some of the members i remember from those days were Andrew[Millipora], Marco, Naresh, Hennie[reef maniac].....
Well in 2007 for what ever reasons Anthony, Dean and myself decided to break away and Masa was born and the rest as they say is history.

Ummmm, you forgot about IMA :nono:

For the record, IMA (International Marine Aquarists) was the first South African discussion forum dedicated to the keeping of marine animals.

This was started long before the time of broadband (December 2000), and we ran it as an email forum. All members used to get emails with any question, and with everybody's replies. Due to the slow speed of the internet (56k dial-up was considered very fast...) we could not attach any photos.

At it's peak, IMA had about 200 members, of which more than half were from countries other than South Africa.

In late 2004 - early 2005 it became clear that, with an increase in internet speed, a web-based forum would be more appropriate, and I gave my full support when Cerwin started his internet forum and invited IMA members to join. I suspended the email forum soon thereafter.
