Marine Salt???

Hi. I would just like to know where is the best place to buy Marine Salt? What is the best brand to use? I have heard that Tetra is a good salt and well priced.
If you have any tips it would be much appreciated.:yeahdude:
 
IMO, Tropic Marin is the most consistent of marine salts that I have experienced, but it costs more, and I am sure you will be recommended Real Ocean and Tetra.

Tetra is not a bad salt, but I found it's moisture content about 25% higher than TM, there by increasing the amount of salt needed by a similar %.
 
Hi dtsmith, some guys have been having issues with real ocean but I have not had any except the KH is a bit low, but I use a alkalinity suplement for that... Check out our sponsor's on the site for prices. Where about in Gauteng are you based
 
We are looking at starting a fish only tank. I have heard that you need to be very particular about your salt if you are working with corals. It this the case with fish too?? Serious rookie over here!
Also I read that your salt should be low in Phosphates and Nitrates. What is 'low'?

Fish only - you get away with any brand.

Should be zero, but some brands can't supply these zero levels so " low levels" is so they can get away with it.
 
Andrew from Eco-Aquatics has been using Real Ocean in all his tanks and his customers's tanks with no problems, and he has a few Hotels and Casino's as customers. I'm sure some guys here will agree that Andrew has some of the most beautiful corals in his tanks. I also use Real Ocean for over a year now with no problems (so far :p)
So my question: The guys that said they have problems with Real Ocean, could it be "bad batch" related?
I will continue using Real Ocean until I'm proven wrong by enough facts or in my own setup ;) So far, I'm happy :)
 
dtsmith for a fish only system as warr has mentioned you can get away with any salt and real ocean will be good enough for that check out Dorry pets and Pet stop for pricing on the salt
 
Hi dtsmith - you can also always run chemical filtration, where you have phosphate remover, and nitrate removers in either a filter bag in your tank's sump, or perhaps run a phosphate and/or nitrate reactor (seperate filtration unit - looks like a fluidized bed filter), also in your tank's sump....

BUt - for FISH ONLY, as Warr have said - you can use ANY salt.... just as long as you keep the salinity of the water correct.... (for fish only systems, with no inverts, you can also get away with a slightly lower SG/salinity, than with reef tanks...
 
Tobes I must agree with you 100% on that one, thats why I mentioned that I dont have a problem and all my corals look happy

But this is the exact problem, it is not consistent. Parameters change from batch to batch.

Not sure how much salt you consume, but just check parameters of the mixed salt from batch to batch.

Just in case, have seen some horrid problems.
 
the best thing i have done to my tank is changing from real ocean to tropic marine.

cyano is gone:thumbup:
 
i'm using real ocean on all my stock tanks and no cyano in them, warr is 100% right the batches do differ

i just went to McD's and took a million salt packets, took a viniger too for variation
