Marine Plywood vs Shutter Plywood

    hi guys i am currently gathering the bits and pieces for my marine build, had a question tho i know marine plywood is the obvious choice however i have had a lot of the timber places recommend shutter plywood instead, what is everyones thoughts on this

    Cheaper, but marine is better its more resilient to moisture.

    There is nothing wrong with shutter ply, it is far cheaper than marine ply and i have even seen a piece that has been submersed in a pool for a number of weeks show little swelling..

    You will obviously seal it with a varnish or wood sealer, so it will become more moisture resistant!

    the trick with any wood is good ventilation in an enclosed area...

    thanks for the replies, yes i will seal it with a varnish, well thats good to know that people out there agree makes my life a lot more happier and cheaper. Probably going to get it today then

    it retails for around R265 - R285 for a 1.220cm x 2.400cm sheet good stuff awsome for a cabinet!

    for now just going to use it for ontop of the stand under the tank then next month building my cabinet around the stand

    will work fine either way... ittakes a stain nicley..

    Agree with leslie , shutterply does stain very nicely , gelmar has stain quite cheap , also emart here in durban sells ply for 199 a sheet

    shutterply, i use 18mm from builders warehouse
    i painted it with Duram Pondseal, it is a reef paint with fibre glass in

    infact i have made 5 tanks from shutterply and this paint

    how much does the duram pondseal normally go for? got pricing for the shutterply from builders warehouse

    I would not even consider going for marine plywood. I've always just coated normal shutterply with either an acrylic based topcoat or enamel and have had numerous "floods" over the last couple of years:whistling:No swelling of wood whatsoever! I don't even make the effort to wipe it off. The paint seals the wood nicely;)
