There is a company in Durban that lamintes veneers (real wood, not the cheap plastic stuff) onto marine ply. They do it in just about any wood you want.

I'm sure there must be somewhere in Cape Town that does the same?

This really is the best of both worlds as the marine ply cane handle a bit of moisture and you get the wood finish of your choice, not just plain boring old pine.

You could use any solid wood as well but it is a bit more expensive and some wood doesn't take water very well. Especially salt water.

You can use proper wood and not just veneers or marine ply if you can afford it. The wood must be properly sealed and treated to accomodate spills and the salt creep which has a way of getting onto your cabinet. You can paint your cabinet a colour to match your house after the treatmment and it doesnt have to be a varnish. Try to avoid chipboard as it swells with humidity and water spills even though the cost may appeal on a tight budget as you will kick yourself down the line

Hi Brendanpre, can you pm me the details of this company as i'd like to veneer standard ply for my cabinets, similar to laminated doors in mordern kitchens, as superwood will inevatably swell.
