    Hi all

I was just thinking of the very first Marine Tank I ever kept which was in 2002

it was a 4 foot tank with an "internal sump" with a air driven skimmer.

there was no such site as MASA & the info we were given was shocking to say the least.

So what has changed in the last 10 years of reef keeping?

when did the following become part of the hobby

    1.) Sump
    2.) MH Lighting / T5's
    3.) Dosing - CA / MG / KH
    4.) CA reactors
    5.) Carbon Reactors
6.) Skimmers & then proper Skimmers
    7.) DSB
    8.) ATS

ATS is old, even the patent on it already expired. And I think a patent is valid for 25 years.

Sump idea is also last century :). What is in the sump did change.

they have all been around for years, since i started in 1991 some of these were there in different forms.

it was just that we have been behind the times. some are just natural evolution of technology and then better suited the hobby, T8 to T5

When I last kept fish I was:

    1) running a wet/dry trickle filter
    2) used open cell foam blocks as mechanical/bacterial filter media in the sump.
    3) sandstone rocks I hauled of the dunes and beach
    4) my ATS was a lot of calerpa growning in the display tank
    5) cool and warm white fluerescent tubes with some Actinic 03 units added to get the colurs brightened up .
    6) crushed coral as sand for that natural reef look.

eish, tough question this, I think propogation, breeding etc are taking over now, especially with regards to enviromental concerns. LED lighting now, maybe pumps are a bit behind. I know the boys all had to DIY their skimmers though also.
