Mangrove Plants

    Does anyone know if its possible to keep mangroves in a marine tank and if so is there anywhere they can be bought?

    Not 100% sure on this Fishfood, but I think it is illegal to keep:whistling:

    Dam would be really cool to have a separate tank with water from the main tank flowing through a mangrove system with some mudskippers and then going back into the main display tank

    If memory serves me right, I have only seen mangrove kept in sumps/refugium.

    I have kept them in a refugium before got them down on the coast many years ago, out grew the system and got rid of them

    you can keep mangoves in your sump, but one cannot collect them as the areas they are in are endangered, one is allowed to collect the propagules/seeds and then germinate them yourself.

    just a remember mangroves use ALOT of Mg and remove alot of nutrients

    should be fine, i only had to get a permit to enter the area, i was told that Mangroves arent on the CITIES list

    what sort of size "mangrove plantation" would one need for say a system of 500ltrs?

    something like a 2ft tanks or bigger?

    Mangrove filtration isnt very effective compared to macro algae. these plants grow extremely slowly and nutrient export are rather slow. these plant are more for aesthetic reasons.

    if you do keep them, make sure they have enough space for there roots to grow as they can break a tank after a while if there isnt enough space.

    i have had my mangroves for about a year now and imported them from the USA. (as "paint sticks")!!!!;);)

    they are slow growers, better off with ATS and chaeto

    Do you know were one can get a mangrove plant in the western cape?

    i have some mangroves in my sump(comparment full of mud)...but they are stuggeling i need to push up my bio load asap...i switched of my skimmer too

    im dosing a it of mg, but it doesnt seem to be working, i added one fish to the system to help a bit:p

    Not in the Western Cape, but they do grow in the northern parts of the Eastern Cape.
