    Hi All,

I recently noticed my mandarin's strange behaviour with my female clownfish at night (after the lights go out): he swims up to her with his fins fully flared and swims next to her. Once he pushed her with his side until she retreated to a hammer coral so that he couldn't pursue. This behaviour has occurred nearly every evening for the last week and he only does this to the one clownfish.

I tried searching for mandarin mating behaviour but haven't seen anything regarding the courtship dance so I am not too sure if this is aggressive behaviour or him being flirty. :confused1:

Anyone else notice something similar with their fish?
If it is aggression from his side, is there anything that I can do to limit it?

hmm interesting, could be both :)

if its aggression not much one can do as i find mandarins to be wonderers so changing things around dont really alter territories.

does your clown have bite marks? missing fins?

No bites marks that I can see and her fins are intact. Normally she is aggressive with the other clowns but she tolerates the mandarin's behaviour...maybe she is enjoying the attention? lol!
I'm more concerned that she may turn on him, her bites are pretty nasty

I would really love to but my tank would not be able to sustain two mandarins :( Poor lover boy will just have to continue flirting with the clown

IF...for any reason you do end up getting another one...PLEASE consider the following...many argue that they had no problems and yes...I have heard of guy's having no problems at all...I mentioned this to my LFS and he also argued and said he never heard of it...needless to say...it didn't go well...:(

What most do is remove the "permanent" one...say sump...then return together to DT..and re-arranging the LR might also help with the "feeling" of a "new tank" for the Mandarin that use to be in the DT...Like I said...some do nothing and have NO PROBLEMS...

    ....;)

then i one of the lucky once, in the 2m tank i have a male and female mandarins and in the 1.5m also a pair of mandarins. i know you you can not put two male in a tank, they will fight until one is left. the same with scooter gobies you can only put a male and a female together in one tank.
