    Good morning all.

My tank has been running for approx 4 months now and everything seems to be settling in nicely... except my ph. I am struggling to maintain it at decent levels. I now dose it each night with kalkwasser to try and maintain an 8.2 - 8.3. This is quite difficult as the kalk normally causes quite a spikein my ph. Is it normal to be dosing with kalkwasser to maintain this ph (and as often as I do?). Is there something out there that will automatically mix kalkwasser and dose?

    Thanks!

You could add the kalk to your auto topup unit.

What is your alkalinity & calcium levels at?
Also, is the room where the tank is standing in well ventilated?

I will check my readings again when I get home, but a couple nights ago they were all looking good (slightly low, but still good) - I can't recall the readings exactly. @459b - Does kalk not have to be mixed and dosed at the same time? @Visser - Tank in entrance hall, so well ventilated. t5 lighting, so hood closed - will this make a difference?

Ph tends to drop at night due to extra co2 so try dose your kalkwasser at night as there is a reaction between the kalkwasser and the co 2 converting co2 into carbonates in otherwords from acidic to alkalinity This will use up the extra co2 in your tank stabilizing ph if you dose kalk during the day with insufficient co2 in water you do not get the same benefit.

Thanks Mandarinman. I'm literally dropping about 0.3 over a 24hr period? Is this not excessive?

I dose my kalk at night - which shoots ph to 8.3, by the next evening, pH is sitting around the 8.0 mark before I dose again

    8.0 isnt excessively low...
My ph in my DT often drops to 7.8 but is almost always stable at 8.0-8.1...

I believe pH is a function of your set-up and what you dose. Your system pH will naturally settle on a specific pH based on this and as long as it is in range then I would not worry about it as you will then be forever trying to fix something that is not a problem.

...and so my inexperience is showing again... I have had my skimmer off as I have been putting in an immune protector for my fish... 10 day cycle and i was told to keep the skimmer off. I think this is my problem. I have now learnt that the skimmer helps with the gaseous conversions as well... Sorry for being a nuisance, but as always, thanks all for your help!

Never a nuisance bud. Rather ask than risk losing livestock!
Yip, switching on your skimmer would definitely help!

Also remember your alkalinity and ambient CO2 levels are the only things determining your pH in your tank (well, the only major factors) assuming you have a well oxygenated tank. Dosing kalkwasser increases alkalinity and hence increase pH, but you do not want to overdose otherwise your Calcium levels will start dropping.
