Main water parameters

No but ive heard that some carbons raise your phosphates if you keep it too long, and im 100% sure that Fluval carbon raises your carbon,im not using any carbon at the moment was just asking if im going to buy very cheap carbon wil there be any negative side effects?

try not to buy any cheap carbon.buy something in the aquamedic, maxizorb or rowa range.something that has a well established name.
carbon must be rinsed in RO in order to remove any phosphates etc...
i personally change carbon every second week in my system

I would NOT recommend the Aqua Medic Carbon, as it is manufactured for air filtration, not water. Not sure of the other two u mentioned. Best brands out there (avail in sa) would be Seachem and TLF hydrocarbon

Can anyone help me with a clear description of what a diatom is and what the difference between a diatom and algea is,and what causes diatoms

Is there anyone here who uses seachem phosguard an have any advice on it

Hi Franske - diatoms are bacteria like cells, and usually have a brownish coloration. It is slimey like cyano, but it is NOT cyano. It is a simple single-cell organism (there are MANY organisms in a spread of diatoms that you would be able to see in your tank)....
Diatoms usually makes it's appearance in new tanks, which is still cycling. I am nearly sure that it lives off silicates in the water.....

SeaChem Phosguard is really good stuff - takes a long-term approach - so, you can leave it in your tank for a long period of time (e.g. 2 to 3 months). BUT, it also takes this amount of time to lower phosphates in your water...

can anyone please advise me on a nice phophate remover I can get in pta east area and that doesnt cost over 100 bucs and something that wil last for a whil, can you reuse serachem phosguard,or is a liquid based one a good option

a good p04 remove does cost a little extra bucks as you paying for quality, and it will be something that will last longer.other good brands are Rowa phos and Aquamedic (not too badly priced)

I think the only PO4 remover you will find under 100 bucks is liquid remover, but this is a short term solution where the granular removers work for 4-6 months

Guys I need some advice on the following three products and how good they work anf how reliable they are:
1. Pure reef suplements liquid phophate remover
2. Nutrafin KH/GH Test kit
3. Nutrafin Ph test kit
Can someone also help me with how much additive you need to add with how much water with the nutrafin ph test kit cause I dont have the instructions,Thanks

Pure Reef products is a great product, but is a short term solution.

I have no experience on the Nutrafin products.

Anyone else with some info and experience of nutrafin test kits and how to use the nutafin ph test kit

Franske - NutraFin is more of a fresh-water specialist type of brand. I am not 100% sure, but think that their test-kits won't be 100% accurate, BECAUSE they do not specialize in marines, but rather than fresh-water..... The most likely fall in the same class (or perhaps a little worse even) than Sera test-kits....

Okay so I bought a sera kh test kit but can anyone help me on how it works cause it doesnt have a colour chart in

I don't know the Sera kit, but most kits are similar. You will add drops till the colour changes from one colour (eg. blue) to clear. The amount of drops it takes to change the colour will correspond to a dKh value.

Liquid PO4 remover is great when you have get rid of loads of PO4 quickly, but to constantly use liquid remover will also get pretty expensive.

Macro Algae and phosphate reactor will end up being way cheaper.
