I have a few SPS as well as Zoa's. My Magnesium level is at 1050ppm. I see on the Magnesium additive bottle that Magnesium lower than around 1350ppm results in Calcium levels not being able to be maintained at above 400ppm. My Calcium at 360ppm, battling to increase this.

First question - can anybody comment on the situation above?

Secondly, is this level of 1050ppm a crisis, or can I slowly increase over next 1 or 2 weeks.

    Thanks
    Chris

Magnesium as far as I remember enables the corals to take up the other elements better. It will also stop you from raising the levels. It is the first thing to dose when you are battling to get the others up. I have previously raised mg levels by more than 50ppm per day with no ill effects. But lower is most probably advised.

What is your kh? Magnesium, calcium and alk levels are all linked. If one is out, the others will be hard to maintain.
Rather raise slowly over a week or two and watch other parameters while dosing.

there is a relationship between Cal, Mag, Alk, Ph.. and all need to be tested. as mentioned above a false reading on 1 will impact on the others...

I would say water changes to bring the levels down.. What are you guys using to increase Mg? Been checking on reef chem calculator and Epsom salts seem to be more potent than most of the commercially available additives.

I have done extensive water changes...50ltrs to a 300 ltr tank...nothing moves it stays in that parameters..i did this with a very narrow tube to slowly adjust but nothing helps..i haven't dosed any Epsom Salts..or anything else yet...and my tank has been running for just over a 5yr period...

Lol I never dosed Ca but my Ca is off the scale.. I dont know why these things happen. I think in my case that its not that the Ca is actually very high but rather that something else is causing a wrong reading. Like the effect of some other ions .. Just a theory

Thanks all. My kh is at 8.6. I am dosing brightwell products. I will dose MG according to directions over next two weeks and see what happens!
