    a usb microscope would be perfect for this and you will also be able to take photos of the culture

    Hi Andre. Was thinking of exactly the same thing. I stumbled across this site and I'm going to try this DIY microscope. If you try the double lens option you apparently can get up to 375x. Using your smartphone allows you to take pictures and/or video. The lenses come out of laser pointers. I picked mine up for R15 each. Then it's just some DIY!     *That is a AAA battery for scale reference.

    i thought i'd send a quick image of a rotifer i found in a drop of culture if anyone is interested. attached image was taken with my iphone 5 using the method mentioned above. i haven't built a rig, i took this free-hand so once my rig is sorted i should get much better focused pics.
