So I have tried and tried with the standard skimmer on my new TL550 but this thing is completely useless, I might as well make coffee in it, does anyone have an idea of the absolute best skimmer available as a replacement, which will also allow the lid to close 100%?

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the help guys, I have seen the red devil nano skimmer but I don't think the lid will close, the cup looks a bit tall, I've also seen the Hydor slim skim nano but I haven't seen much info on its actual performance. I am a little worried about spending a lot of money and then being disappointed with the performance.

It will fit on the newer TL550, the skimmer cup can be submerged as its water tight, when cleaning the skimmer needs to be lifted up, if that makes sense

I have indeed tried a fluval skimmer at a LFS, unfortunately it's too wide, I believe the width of the skimmer is 12.5cm while the back compartment is only 11 - 11.5.

I have not tried the red devil but I did try BUBBLE-MAGUS - Aquarium Internal skimmer|external skimmer|Dosing pump|Calcium reactor|Nitrate reductor/NO3 reductor|Filters|Turtle shell lampshade|Water monitor and controller|Additives|moonlight LED unfortunately the skimmer had to be pushed down to deep so it just overflows, it is very similar to the red devil, it seems like a big pain to try and get a skimmer that actually works for the TL550, I am not willing to do any modifications to the tank as it is still brand new, also I have not seen any evidence that the Tunze DOC does a better job then the standard skimmer after watching several video reviews, you get the same tea colored water in most of these nano skimmers it seems.

Maybe it's time to design my own :p

I closed my eyes and bought a tunze 9004 protein skimmer. Fits perfectly in 2nd chamber.
Which Boyu skimmer are you running at the moment?
I couldnt find the hydor when I looked.

Hi Dan, the 9004 DOC Skimmer does a lot more than give you tea coloured water.

The "Flash Skimming" principle enables highly efficient foam production. Protein-rich surface water is mixed thoroughly in the foamer. On the surface of the air bubbles forming, pollutants such as protein, cellulose, dead cells etc are absorbed immediately, the air bubbles are very fine, with a diameter of between 0.1 and 0.3mm. The water/air mixture is expanded and stabilized in the skimmer cup, the water returns to the aquarium, and the protein-loaded air bubbles reach the skimmer cup reactor. The patented anti-foaming system prevents the skimmer from over foaming and controls performance, depending on the water level and organic load.
