I have a pair of lagoon gobies that took up residence in a pvc pipe in my tank.
They seem to have settled quite nicely, although they are still fairly shy.
I have noticed on numerous occasions, that Bonny (the female) will pick up one of the small hermits, and drop it at the entrance of the pipe. Clyde have also done this a couple of times, but not as much as Bonny.
She was even brave enough to take on Hercules, my blue eye, but could not convince him to follow. In the pic, she took a break, pinning him down, after playing tug of war to kidnap him for her house: ImageUploadedByTapatalk 21368704640.973073.jpg
She gave up after about 5 minutes, kidnapped a small hermit again :)

It is known that some gobies have symbiotic relationships with certain shrimp species. I was just wondering if Bonny and Clyde was perhaps looking for a "symbiotic hermit" as a substitute?
Should I try to get a shrimp for them?
    Suggestions / thoughts welcome. ;)

It is not so much the hearing, as the feeding that I am stressing about. Since they are predators, I am more concerned that my two clown gobies may fall prey to him. (not big odds, but still not odds I am prepared to take - Love Sunshine and Noodles too much :))

What size tank do you have?

Another Q, will the pistol actually pair up with the gobies?

Who choose who? Gobies the shrimp? Or shrimp the gobies?

he is currently in a std 3ft, was in my 4ft before i took him down, he never moved more than 10cm from his burrow, and his goby stayed with him.
no idea, they chose each other

Open Q, Is it normal for gobies to try and adopt other symbiotic creaures if no shrimps are available?

Thanks Michael, I am following that thread... Will have to do a bit more reading regarding size requirements, as a 10cm one (like what Dallas have) might be a bit big for my nano? I am only assuming here, like I said, will have to read up a bit more...

Hi Louis, Indeed, they do appear to be qute interesting creatures... Internet here I come... As if I do not have enough research that needs to be done already. Sigh!

Getting them small is not the problem... Getting them to STAY small. Those buggers just don't listen, do they? Skipped the "Obey all your human's commands" chapter in their "How to be the best aquarium pet ever!" manual :)

I have decided to put this thought on ice for now, as I would need to do proper research on this. According to the (limited) info available, the net only states thatthese gobies form symbiotic relationships with "some" Alpheus shrimp species.
Since the Alpheus species is commonly categorised as Snapping and / or pistol shrimps, and there are over 300 species, this is not something I will be deciding on over a glass of amarula, and based on a cute pic I like.
I will first try to determine the exact origin of my lagoon gobies, (there are 3 possible areas, the most likely being Thailand at the moment), and then see what shrimp species originate from that area to shorten my search list..
    And take it from there...

I would also have to take into consideration my current inhabitants (small clown fish, and clown gobies) So I may end up discarding the idea overall, depending on my findings.

Thank you all for your input, will keep you updated as soon as I have more info available :)

    Bottoms up!:1:

better to do research first than tears later.

Let us know when you find a suitable shrimp.
