    I was just wondering....
I know that any business wants to turn stock into cash as soon as possible but maybe us as the aquarists should wait at least a week before purchasing LS/corals that has just landed?
Sure you might miss out on that beaut that you've been wanting but would you rather wait a week and having a better chance of it's survival or would you rather take a chance and hope that it makes it thru in your tank? It really is a 50/50 chance of them making it....

It's upsetting reading threads where fish are purchased the day or the day after they land only for them to peg a few days later. :(

I wait a week or so. If its gone its gone, but the fish are more relaxed and you will see if its eating or not

I just wish the stores would enforce or put something in place not to sell stock right away...

Tell me if I'm wrong but is it not less stress on the fish if you take it from the shipping bag directly into you qt tank but then again its a 50/50.
Is you qt not more stable than the holding tanks in the LFS that recieves fish every week and introducing alot of bactera and viruses?

Just to add I also wait a week because I like to see of it will still be there and if not I was not meant to have it.

I don't think I would want to take that chance. Would you or anyone pay R1600 for a purple tang right off the ship?

I always ask them to feed the fish, and I go there like every 3rd day to see if it is eating. If the fish eats with every visit then I know its healthy...

A person buying newly landed fish takes the responsibility and risk when he walks out the store with them IMHO. Cant blame the shop unless they lied about them landing weeks before etc. I know where this thread is pointed and I for one do not blame the LFS for selling newly landed fish, if they are upfront about it, no problem.

Is it a good practice? No

I think shops should hold fish for at least a week before selling. There is one small LFS in Durban that actually gives a crap about their livestock and quarantines and treats for diseases before selling. Vastly better way of doing things, even if you pay a little more.

On the other hand there are a few larger shops where nearly every fish has 2-3 diseases, tanks are overstocked, incompatible species put together etc. A pile of male fairy wrasses in one tiny tank? Actually did a facepalm when I saw that.

IMO if a shop stands by the quality of their livestock they'll let you put down a deposit and keep the fish for 2 weeks, refunding the deposit if the fish dies or isn't feeding.
