    Hi All

    I bought some live rock on Friday last week to start cycling my tank and have noticed that the rock is starting to turn yellow. It is only happening on the 2 big pieces of rock and the other 3 smaller pieces are still as they were when I bought them.
    I have been told that this could be die off and that it will recover, I am not sure if this is correct as there is no scum at all coming out of my skimmer (Reef Octopus).
    I then did a few water parameter checks and these are the results.
    Nitrate NO3 = +/-18 ppm
    Alk = 1.72
    PH = 8
    SG = 1.021

    Is there anything that I am missing or is this normal?
    Please tell me that I haven't messed up before I even got started.

    Best regards
    Dragonet

    Could it not also be the start of diatoms?

    My little money is on diatoms. If it is diatoms then there is nothing to worry about. Part of the cycle.

    That looks like diatoms, nothing to worry about, it will go away. How long has the tank been cycling now?
