    HI all

Would live rock stay alive if the water that its in is not being skimmed i have added about 20kg to my old live rock and have 2 seio M1500's and an eheim 600lph return providing circulation so there are no dead spots, the water is quite warm because of the seios. oh yes all the water was freshly made on friday with an sg of 1.020? I hope to get the skimmer up and running by next week wed or thurs. all this is in a 120L bucket

Hi Ziyaad how you keeping bud - my live rock had no problem staying in 90 ltr bucks with power heads keeping the water flowing no skimmer and kept adding as building my LR stand - no amonia spikes - and still busy with it should be over tomorrow total of about 120kg of LR

Yes Ziyaad I agree whit Mekaeel the LR will be ok without a skimmer for now, and Mekaeel is one of the expert around. Though I would take the sg from 1.020 to 1.023 - 1.024. Mekaeel can correct me if I'm wrong.

LR is very phenominal stuff.. when we cured some that we harvested for our own use it spiked in nitrate for 2 days and by day 7 the level was undetectable.. we ran skimmerless as the pump packed up with all the sediment that settled as the rock wasnt properly washed off.. is say the main things to make sure of are temp/salanity and flow...

Hi guys correct me if wrong but would it not be better to have the sg lower coz depending on how porous the rock is it would have tons of salt particles in it that would contribute to the salt levels getting higher unless the LR is totally dry (stupid question maybe?) and when ready to use the LR check that the container where the LR is kept and the tanks are the same?

i would treat it as any live organism as that is esentially what it is.. personally id go with as normal as possible in terms of water chemisty.. salt particles if embeded in the pores of the rock will dissolve and then the water can be tested and calibrated as necessary to achieve the desired SG readings..
