I added live rock to my new tank yesterday that I got from a fellow reefer, some nice mature pieces. My question is that there are a lot of brittle stars and other critters.Do I need to feed them during the cycling process or do I leave things till the cycle is over?Any help will be appreciated.

feed them, else they will die, become part of the cycle process, prolonging it.

If these are the only rocks in your system. And you did transport it under water, then your cycle is basically over. Although we say we cycle the water, actually we are cycling the rocks. And what it really means is that we wait out the time it takes for all the dead organisms inside the rock to decompose or be eaten. If this rock comes out of a long running system, and kept under water during transport, then you should be done.

Problem is the rock you buy from the LFS. Especially freshly imported. The rock is transported via air freight. And obvious due to weight, they are transported wrapped in wet newspaper. So there is a period that things do die inside the rock.

Hi Rince - you can feed the TANK somewhat to assist with the cycle - this food will supply for the live rock as well.

I was speaking to a lfs and they say I should remove the brittle stars as they are pests and will out compete other organisms for nutrients? These are the only rocks in my system and they wereout of water for no more than 10 minutes.

No way! They are such a valuable part of your clean up crew, maybe not know, but later you will need them. Be patient, you need to give your system time to mature, to remove the brittle stars because they compete with your newly established system would be unwise and short sighted. IMHO:)

I doubt if you should listen to any other "advice" from that LFS. Rather use MASA.

LOL - it's because of LFS's like that the hobby has the bad name. Stay away from that person at that LFS.

These are very good critters to have!
