Hi guys

Quick question, can I put my live rock/Dead rock directly on my substrate or do I need to put them on eggcrate first?

Hey JDV, are you contemplating using egg crate throughout the base of the tank?

I am still deciding on what to do with regards to this, but would like to keep gobies, who are sand sifters...dont know if the egg crate will be bad for them...

I am, my plan is to cut the eggcrate the same size or a bit smaller as the bottom piece life rock meaning the eggcrate is under the live rock by doing this I don’t think it will hurt the sand sifters.

Hi @JDV and @Clownfish9906 , came across this thread and interested to know are you guys using the egg crate as previously discussed, i am in two minds myself as to use it as a base for protection, but then others are talking about detritus build up. Would appreciate any thoughts on the matter

hey @WarrenElvis

I have actually put the liverock onto the sandbed. I did not have the egg crate at the time and wanted to start up the tank. I not noticed any ill effects thus far...

Hope you come right...

Hi @WarrenElvis

What I did with mine was, all my live rock is down the middle of the tank. I filled the tank with water first. Then I laid a Pease of eggcrate in the middle of the tank and all my rock on top of the eggcrate.
I then used my aragonite to cover the base of the tank around the live rock. There is 2 reasons why I did this. 1. In my mind it distributes the wait of the live rock across the complete bottom rather on just one spot.
2. My rock is not on any substrate that could cause some dead spots later as the water is allowed to move underneath and trough the rock. Hope this makes sense. Eggcrate is cheap and worth the effort in the long run

What i did with mine was put egg crate in certain parts of the tank under the substrate so some of my LR is on it and this way i wont have any issues with burrying.

Hi @ChrisRaubs when I enquired about getting some, the first place I found was plastic world in joburg for about 150 a sheet and was a bit to expensive for shipping down to Durbs,so managed to find an aircon supply company selling it as well as most installers apparently use it. Best bet for you is plastic world just google them for number
