Hey Guys, I'm planning on re-doing my rock work and due to this I placed some live rock on my DSB which is close to one year old (Whoohoo:yeahdude:). Before adding the live rock there was some debris of some kind but since I added the live rock there are a lot of "goggas" (copepods and other funny shrimpy things) running around and eating the debris now my DSB looks quiet neat. Should I leave some of the live rovk when re-doing the rock work in my DT?

    Will take pics 2 night.

If you can suspend it above the sand, it will be great. Either on a piece of eggcrate, or on some conduit pipe pillars.

yip as Riaan said, you need to lift it off the sand, this is so that the upper reached of the DSB are exposed to laminar flow which brings in oxygen for the bacteria, if it is not suspended you will make these parts anaerobic and possibly damage the aerobic bacteria populations.

Is it ok to make it the full length and width of the DSB?

In my refugium I had eggcrate with pvc pipe legs over the DSB. The eggcrate was roughly 30mm away from the glass in all directions to ensure adequate flow around the live rock and the eggcrate.

Thanks Tobes, I will get cracking with the stand. Quick question.... Where do you buy your livestock from? I drive past Witbank on a weekly basis but never stop to checkout petshops. Also should you need something from Jhb let me know!

I got a cheato ball above the DSB. And It is full of pods and worms. Yes the pods need somewhere to hide and breed. So an open DSB area is not that good for them.

You will see the same pod live increase if there is cheato and if there is live rock. And the cheato does another helpful function, remove nitrates and phosphates, just like a scrubber.

The copepods actually do not need a light, they breed better in the dark...:)
But Cheato does need light. :(

And Liverock also do not need a light. Other advantage (if you leave the live rock underwater) is that sponges inside and under the rock is also some of the best filter feeders there is.

Its up to you how you use that "wasted" space above the sand.

Thanks man. No shops here that I know of, went to 3 and no marines.
Don't have livestock yet, waiting for my new tank - should be ready anytime.
I will probably buy livestock in PTA when the time is right.
