    Hi everyone

As some of you might know I have only kept freshwater aquariums to date. So right now I am just reading up on everything.

Anyway, I was wondering as to where most of south africa's live rock is coming from?
Have any of you read articles such as...

    Saltwater Aquarium Live Rock

Then I see in the US , people are using aquaculture 'manufactured' live rock

    Home

I just wondered how everyone feels about what the harvesting of live rock is doing to the ocean itself aswell as its long term sustainability.

Please understand I am not attacking anybody , I just want to hear more about members opinions on this , and whether alternatives are available in SA??

Kenya, Fiji, Indonesia and out own shores.

Most rock from Fiji is a mixture of aquaculture and off the reef.
Not good, and eventually there will be no more live rock. It takes 10's of 1000's of years to make this liverock, so Eventually aquaculture will be the only source.

well i know that i saw once that there is people out there that places rock in the ocean where there is nothing then they harvest it later and sell it as live rock it was on discovery i dont mind of they do that but it is not nice if they brake up reefs to do that i think it whould be nice if the fish you buy in the pet store is more bred than caught but that is only me ;)

Guys, remember not all LR is broken off the reefs. Most areas have LR that has already broken of a reef due to natural conditions eg.waves etc... These rocks are just picked up and sold.

I know this is a general question and will raise many different opinions, but what is the ratio between kg (of LR) per 100litres ..... lets say good quality Fiji rock ....

I used it in my previous setup, not porous enough, and it leaches stuff back into the water. Always had problems with nitrates

i was thinking to take some lava rock and leave it in a tidal pool some were save for some weeks for the sea to sort all the stuff out and to get some natural grove on it before i put it in my tank.
What do you oks think about this plan.

    Ben,
Is that lava rock that you have black and white in colour and very brittle?
I have something similar and have heard about it leaching back into the water.
Are you able to post a pic of this rock?
    Cheers

    Hi Anemone / guys....

I see that Brenda quoted Simon Garratt's web-site! He has been my role model for a VERY LONG time.

He ONLY has man-made (his own creations) rock in his tank - NO live rock! Have a look around the web-site of Reef Eden.... you will be amazed!
