    Hi All

I have a little generator that generates 1000w. What should I be running on my take when load shedding happens?

Return pump or is just a flow pump good enough? or just an air stone?

    Return pump and heaters.

Return pump will put oxygen in the water.

Test your powerheads. Some powerheads and some generators do not work together. On my old geni the Sunsun, Seio and the TS2 and Ts1 skimmers pumps do not work. they all stutter.

Also lost 2 T5 ballasts, blown while on the geni. Now I got all those off while on Geni. Running no lights either.

Getting the bigger newer diesel geni back soon. In for repairs. Did not test the SunSun and Seio pumps yet on the diesel generator.

Just run return pump, heat will stay pretty constant but you can add the heater if at night and temp drops

Depends if you have an AVR or not, if there is any "clever" electrical items you have, with say a board or a chip, don't use a Genset without AVR, if it has AVR you can run anything, based on the power consumption, make sure to have the plugs plugged out when you start the genset, then when it is running and idling start putting your plugs in and turning the various units on.

Thanks for the responses. It does not have AVR and that was going to be my next question. Is it safe to run return pumps on a non AVR generator?

I used to have a small 900va Ryobi gennie that ran my pumps just fine. I think that DC stuff will have less wear and tear running on less than optimal power supply but I am not an elactrical engineer. I know that DC is better than AC if you don't have a pure sine wave inverter and so have a square sine wave. I feel that with less power the DC things will also fare better as motors will just run slower and the electronics do not suffer with the stress of not oscillating at the right frequency.

Might be a problem if you running return pump only with biocubes. Bacteria will deplete water of O2 if the skimmer is off. I think it would be better running flow pumps within the tank. So all O2 depletion will be restricted to Biocube chamber in the sump..

That does depends on your bioload.

Plus other setup considerations that could impact gas exchange.
For example a TL550 with lid plus stocked to the max, never mind overstocked. That will not make 2 hours before you run into issues.

Big open top tank and some windows open allowing a draft, and the scenario changes a lot.

I do not want to hi-jack the threat, but can I use a battery air pump during a 4 hour power failure?

    yes, why not.

You just need the surface to move. Airpump will help.

Surface agitation with the water bubbles circulating the water would help, I would however try and have the bublbler as low as possible in the tank.
