Hey people, so i have a bit of a problem with lighting. at the moment i have a unit that has 4 x 13watt units in and to find replacement globes is impossible.(you guys starting to see my delema:whistling:)

    ok so my tanks dimentions are 500 x 400 x 600( l x b x h ) waterlevel at 500.

now i need to before the end of the hear redo my lighting and have no clue what to replace it with.

i was thinking or mh or t8.

Now my reason for wanting to go mh or t8 is because i need something that will exactly fit over the tank the light unit cant be bigger and i would preferably like to diy the unit myself. i was thinking of going with t8 because u get rather short tubes, im not sure on wattages tho, and offcourse the heat issue.

then there is mh i dont want to use more than a 70 watt mh and still then there might be heat issues.

guys take into mind i want to lift the unit another 10 cm above the top of the glass of the tank and i am only goint to be keeping zoa's

    Will 24W T5 not fit?

Else 70W MH have to do it.
But you have to get the right globe. You will not have the luxury of using globe combinations to get the desired lightning.

24W T5s are 550 long I think. So it will not fit on the 500 long tank. I tend to aggree with Riaan on the 70W MH. Will be easier to get than the others, or maybe go LED. Will cost you though.

If need be i will add a few blue led downlighters to the mh, will this be ok? It can double up as night light altho the downlighters are a bit strong for that.

    back to t8's

anyone know how effecient they are, say i use 4 globes i think 15 watt globes?

I feel 150 watt mh is far overkill for an only zoa tank, but i just thaught about it, how about a 70 watt mh 20000k and then if i need to add blue just at the 15 watt t8 actinics and purples?

the 150 has a more vibrant light than the 70 i use 2 x 70w over my nano and it looks pale i used 14000k bulbs, now i have 1 x 150w mh and the colour just looks perfect

look in the clasified there is 150 mh with bulbs forsale, and yuo will find it ezyr to buy 150 bulbs than 70w bulbs. i bought mine for R450 a unit for 70w and the bulbs i got for free from another reefer, but they cost smthing like R330
