Hi guys. Was just wondering. I read that T5s obviously use more electricity than Leds, but a lot of people still prefer T5s? What is your opinion on this?

my feeling is use both, hybrid lighting has many benefits, gone are the days of saving electricity from using leds, what you save is replacement on bulbs

eg, my current tank had 8 x 39w T5 which is 312W, i replaced with 2 x radions 350W, so i use more watts but save on replacing T5 bulbs.

but i believe corals will benefit from both

the main saving with LED is as dallas stated, replacement costs of bulbs, but you can take is a step further and in certain cases remove the need for a power hungry chiller unit from your system.

personally i love T5, but why i moved to LED was more so because i can manipulate the settings of the colour i can achieve withfmy lighting without having to trial and error different bulbs to achieve the spectrum/colour i want..

    T5s

Thanx guys. What is the cost of say one 'globe' for a 1.2 tank more or less? And you have to replace every 6 months?

once a year is usually suffiecient, but every 6 months is the recomended norm.. i cant see many reefers forking out that kind of cash that frequesntly..

quality bulbs can range from R345 - R385 per bulb last i checked, i was running an 8 x 54w T5 unit.. so LED was the next logical choice.

also the T5 can last 18 months as per manufacturer Giesemann
    but every 12 - 18months is good
