    Howzit,

    We still gota build the canopy for our tank, and need to descide how the lighting will be installed.

    Here is a lil example diagram of what i was thinking... please suggest what T5 tubes you would use, gona use 54W balasts i think ?!? each balast takes two tubes?!?
    got a 8 output Siemens LOGO PLC that ill program as a timer for all the lights. including the sump lights.

    Oh and i know not to use mirror but it will be sealed in the enclosure, no moisture from the tank should get to it(Hopefully)

    I'm a marine noob, but surely the photo period is way too much? Even though it is staggered.

    Skip the mirrors and get a proper reflective material. Mylar or polished Aluminium if you can find or Alanod if you feeling flush

    Im also new to this, thats why i posted the idea here, waiting for some expert advice...
    What i like about his is I can program the lights how its needed, the above is jus an example of the idea I had. I can always shorten or lengthen the times of each light sequence. my thoughts was creating something like sunrise and sunset... maybe stupid but I like the idea of that... jus need some expert opinions to point me in the right direction....:thumbup:

    thanks for the opinions thus far....

    I agree. No mirror. There are many reasons. Rather go with white powder coated aluminum if you can't get alanod.

    But is the point of the reflector not to reflect? whats better than an actual mirror?
    can I please have some reasons on why not mirror?

    Nothing wrong with staggering to create a sunrise/midday/sunset effect, just a shorter time frame. I would assume like plants, photosynthetic corals also need rest/dark period?

    Hi Gareth, without being too technical (didnt make sense to me at first either) light travvels through the glass to the reflecting side of the mirror & back out again. It is bent when going in & out thus changing its effectiveness, quality and characteristics

    Hope it makes sense

    yup, like i said, i can change the parameters of the lighting to increase or decrease... may be make it like:
    A = 07:00 ON
    B = 09:00 ON
    C = 10:00 ON
    D = 11:00 ON
    E = 12:00 ON
    A = 14:00 OFF
    B = 15:00 OFF
    C = 16:00 OFF
    D = 17:00 OFF
    E = 19:00 OFF

    A 12 Hour Light Cycle ?!?

    Oh.. Last post was at Neil.h, didnt see the other replys til now...

    Thanks Frans, so maybe jus a white reflective surface then?

    Is it not the blues that bring out the colour in some fish n corals, should they not be mixed with the normal lights to keep things looking lekka?

    where in GP are you...
    you can get alunod from place in Randburg and if you ask for sales and tell them it's for your fish tank they know exactly what your talking about, goes for R300 for the smaller sheet of roughly 1m2, then just do with it what you planned with the mirror, maybe cheaper as well.

    Was busy in a meeting. Look around on the net for results on the reflection of light, first off a mirror isn't that good at reflecting back light as say Mylar or Alanod. I seem to remember a white surface being better than a mirror. Mirrors also have a sliver backing that will sweat and eventually peel off. Also your canopy is going to weigh a ton :)
