My system to date is FOWLR (standard 4ft). Im adding some soft coral soon, starting with some GSP's and whatever else @dallasg is gonna supply me with. I got no plans for SPS anytime soon..

Can someone plz advise on the combination of T5's i will need to sustain soft coral: GSP's, leathers etc.

    I currently have 1*Giesmann 10k and 1*actinic, both 54watts..

Please advise(specify the color temperature of the T5 tubes i will need)..

Correct me if i'm wrong, the 10k tube is for coral growth and the actinic just for aesthetics?

Here's a FTS with both the tubes i currently have, i think it looks too white..

    hi,

corals do use the blue light for growth, well it penetrates the deepest in water.
i would add 4 more globes and that will allow you to keep all softies and lps with out any issues.

i would add 3 geiseman aquablue+ and 1 pure actinic

the 20k does play a function zak, what it is I don't know lol but apparently it does have a role. You just need 1x10000k and 1xactinic or if you want more colour then 1x pure actinic giesmann. I just have 4 T5's and my lps and softies are doing great! A total of 6 T5's would be better but you can add them later on

Tremayn, are you saying I need to add 1 more 10k to the one I have? What color temperature is pure actinic?

what you should have min is:
    2x 10000k
2x actinic (20000k) OR 1x actinic and 1x pure actinic (im not sure of the k, I think its 22000k but its more purple and looks cool :p)

If you want to give the tank a blue look then I would go with 4x actinic and 2x 10000k. You need the 10000k for the growth. With fish only then you can use 3 actinic and 1 10000k. If there is a lot of blue then corals will not fully open up. Once the 2x 10 000k come on then the corals open up nicely. I just have 4x t5. When just the actinics are on then the lps and shrooms are still half asleep, when the 2x 10000k and 2x actinics are on then the lps polyps extend fully and the shrooms open up wide

    Thanks Tremayn,

What make of tubes are you using? Giesmann are expensive!! Are you 54watt tubes?

hit the thanks button then :plol
Yip I have 54w tubes. I am still using the standard tubes that came with my unit. So they are cheapo globes  .. Get the osram 10000k t5's as they are very good and are cheap. You can get reeftek actinics but giesmann is worth 2-3 reefteks haha. Do you have a light unit or did you diy one? Reflectors are important! :)

    what would be nice is:
    2x osram 10000k T5's
    1x reeftek actinic
    1x giesmann pure actinic
This should give you more of a blue colour but 2 10000k and 2 actinics give you like a xenon colour light. Its a blue/white. Its pretty nice

I wasn't aware that osram made 10k tubes, I know about the 8.5k skywhite but no idea where to get it??

this is what my tank looked like before. Its 1x 10000k and 1x actinic on each ballast. Later I changed it to 2x 10 000k on one ballast because I could set the actinic to come on first and go off last but this does not look as nice as it was before

you can see its a blue/white light. I will find out where you can get the right osram tubes from. Where about are you?
