    Hi guys

I need some advice on lighting for a new aquarium. The DT dimensions are 700x550x550deep.

I have provisionally decided to go for T5's, 4 x 54W (600mm). I will build my own frame for it.

From the in depth approach to lighting thread I calculated that I need about ~16000 lm for the tank.

    My questions:

    - Does this sound right?
    - Where can I buy these lights / balast / fittings in the Pretoria area?
    - Which brand / specs should go for?

    Thank you

Hi Jack, in all honesty i would much rather go for a pre assembled unit which already has the reflectors , ballasts ect. Might be a bit cheaper but at least you know it will be waterproof and designed to work on a marine tank. I always wonder with these DIY units if perhaps there is a chance that a steel screw can come loose and fall into your tank ect...just maybe a few other things to consider. The biggest cost would be your globes, which has to be marine and bought from a marine shop. Per globe it's around R240-00 the frame, ballasts ect are the cheap part of the DIY project..just my 2c worth

    Thank you for the feedback.

Which brand would you guys recommend if I go the pre-assembled route?

try petstop, dorry's, idol marine, any petshop should have them if they deal in marine aquatics :)

Look in the for sale section. There used to be a few for sale.

Going the DIY route is not really cheaper than a second hand unit.
