Hi Guys

I would like to know what is the minimum and maximum lighting time for a reef tank is? When I started my tank the idea was FOWLR but now seeing
other member’s Reef tanks I am in two minds. So I am doing some homework on costing’s and so on

A quad t5 unit will be ok if they are 54W, anything less and u will not have success with anything except softies.

For SPS, LPS u need decent light, for softies u need ok light. An anemone needs plenty light, so u may need 6 T5's for that

Yeah 4x 54w will get u started no problem with softies and LPS. Not the best for SPS, but it may work of you place the corals higher up.

How about another 4 light unit, then you'll be styling!

for that size tank a quad 54watt unit is even sufficient for sps,1stly 2 quads wont fit and will be a waste and 2ndly the tanks depth is shallowish, been there done that, maybe just change out your bulbs to ATi,the shine a lot brighter than the standard bulbd in most units, you perhaps have an oddyssea quad unit??? if so it'll work perfect with ATi's

I would say it is enough to sustain it, but I don't think they'd thrive...

as we speak, there is a very successful thriving tank, same size as his, with same unit, just different bulbs that is thriving for pass 3 years and its a SPS TANK;)... i talk from experience, not what i think, but what i know:tt2:

infact the tank was recently changed to a 600high instead of 450 and he just added an extra 2 T5s for the extra depth, and yes i know that lights is the topic here but there are many factors which contribute to success with sps

That is pretty cool, thanks I have never seen that done. is it a tank on this forum? I still think growth would be quite sluggish. I also don't believe the extra tubes would be a waste as one can get nice colour variations from the morning through to day and evening, with only all tubes running at once for a few hours a day... I guess it is up to the individual want they want; save 108 watts or have the extra colouring.
