    Hi all,

    I'm planning my next tank.
I'm still not convinced if I should run MH, but that is a question on it's own.

What I would like to know, for T5 lighting (DIY), would a 2m or 2.2m tank be better?

    The tank will be either:

    2000l x 700w x 650h (water level) = 910L

    2200 x 700w x 650h (water level) = 1001L

I can go wider from 700 to 800 if need be.

    All input apreciated!

The globes for the T5s will be expensive if you go for a good make

Sometimes I should just check my stock. Found a spare 39w T5. So the length is 860mm, this means that running 2 next 2 eachother I get the following:

    2m tank:
    860 x 2 = 1720 leaving 280mm for end caps etc.

    2.2m tank:
    860 x 2 = 1720 leaving 480mm for end caps etc.

Ok, now I just confused myself, need the DIY experts input

Well, AFAIK Giesman (spelling...) tubes are 1.1meters long (the 54W).

So you should be able to get these tubes next to each other and do 2.2 meters.

MH or T5, the amount of lights you'll need over a 2.2M will be costly, not just Eskom, but replacements as-well.

    Go led.

2m or 2.2m will require at least 3 halides, what corals are you keeping?

Well I'm a softies guy, so probably don't need MH.
    I was thinking of running 12 T5's 39w, I could get away with 8 :)

I know Giesman is the market leader, but I'm a fan of reeftek T5's. Been running them for about a year and my corals and fish love them. So at +-R120 a globe, it is not that bad. Geisman +- R300 a globe

    Like I said, I'm a softies guy :p

Why not go 8 x 80w? Not much more than 54w.

What is the length of the 80w?

The more I think of it, I would probably not go for MH, so T5 only!

    Good call Gaboon!

Looks like the length is 1450 per tube, so would be much better than running 2 39w next to each other.

    Starting to look good.

    Thanks all

You dont have to run then next to each other, you could stagger the 80w so that the entire tank gets light.

White,Actinic and that purple color :)

    I do aim for a 1000L DT so 2000 x 800 x 650 = 1040L :yeahdude:

why the option of an extra 0.2m? Check which lenght will fit the room/area better. What overflow will you have - this could also effect the length.

I'm thinking of going the 2m route.

With overflow, well I'm going to make waves in the tank, so the overflow should be able to handle it.
