Hi my name is Christo and i'm addicted to H2O, Salt and Fish !!!!!!................

Hi guys hope you're all doing well, this is my first thread ever so here it goes...

I'm completely new to this hobby I already bought most of my gear just waiting for RO water (damm thing is slow).

My one tank is 1300mm long, 550mm high and 450mm wide,
    Not sure of sump measurements,
    4 x Reeftek T5 lights (2 x 12 000k, 1 x 10 000k and 1 x Actinic),
    Reeftek, Reef Octopus TS2 Skimmer,
    1 x Seio M620 Flow Pump 2400 l/hr,
    1 x Seio Prop 530 Flow Pump 2000 l/hr,

Other tank is 650mm long, 550mm high and 450mm wide,
    Cascade 1000 canister filter
Still getting the rest of the parts as and when the bank manager permits!!! Ha ha
Please let me know if you guys think I should change some of the equip or need to add more......

Chat later will try and upload some phodies in a couple min.

    Cheers:peroni:

    hey Christo,
welcome to MASA great to have you here. Love the sound of the enthusiasm with which you are comming into Marines:)

if you think a RO unit is slow, wait till you have to finish the cycle before adding LS before thinking whats slow! hehe.

but thats a lovely sounding tank, nice lights, nice skimmer and a few pumps, so looks like you are set to start up :) looking forward to watching you and your tanks progress :)

Hi Christo! A VERY WARM WELCOME to MASA, man! Great to have you on-board! Awesome that you have found and joined MASA!

Sound like your equipment is quite decent. Who advised you on this? Also - why are you thinking of using a canister filter? What media are you going to put into the canister filter?

Also - what substrate are you thinking of using?

Good luck with your journey in the world of marines! Please don't be afraid to ASK ANY QUESTIONS! This is extremely important! Ask as MANY questions, that it might take for you to become the BEST reefer you CAN BE!

Also - have a read through the other "New member" threads, also look at the pictures in our "Members' tanks and setups" forum.

Try and set yourself a goal - let us assist you in achieving this goal!

    Welcome Christo.

When you say your RO unit is slow, how slow? 1 drop per second?

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the warm welcome!!!

Guys from what I've seen on your site so far I'll need more flow pumps and I see that you guys don't like bio balls and noodles in the sump any advice will try and post some pics today to show you my setup.

Crispin - I'm not looking forward to that +- 2 month cycling period :whistling: but at least I've got some friendly new buddies that I can learn a lot from in that dreadful period.

Jacques - The guy at of of the LFS suggested the equipment. I wanted a fish only tank something in the line of a lionfish, eel and a trigger for the small tank. If you think I should go the sump route please let me know. If I can keep the canister what media would I need? I would like to have very fine crushed coral and some LR (I'm out on the East Rand any idea where I can get nice and good priced LR?

Rory - I'm just kidding with the RO is not that slow, I just can't wait 2 get the cycling started.

Hi Christo - IF you want to keep fish only, you are welcome to keep the canister filter. The only reason why you would WANT to have your nitrates as low as possible, is for keeping of corals.
So - if you are thinking of keeping ONLY the fish that you mentioned, then the higher nitrates (too nitrates are also not good for fish), should not bother the fish, THAT much....

I would rather suggest putting nitrate reducing media (ie. zoolite) and phosphate reducing media (ie Rowaphos or SeaChem Phosguard) in the canister filter.

And YES - the bio-balls does the same thing as the canister filter with standard media in..... it breaks the ammonia down to nitrites and the nitrites down to nitrates.... and that's it.... nothing more....

A DEEP SAND BED (sand of which the particle sizes are between 0.05mm and 1mm in size - and where the sand bed is at least 12cm to 15cm deep) - is FAR superior in it's filtration, than bio-balls, or a canister filter.
