I was wondering who has had Led's and how long they have had them.

And secondly if Diy has performed the same bought units.

Personally I made my led's almost 3 years ago and they are still going strong.

I have LED's, but after the hassle I have with my pacific sun unit and seeing @REDpepper's tank yesterday, I am gong back to complete T5's. Don't get me wrong, LED's work. I am just sick of the hassles.

    This should be interesting
Seeing as the initial hype of LEDs has somewhat died down and the promises of massive electricity savings has all but been abandoned....the question of longevity can finally be answered.

Does running on a lower percentage not result in less electricity usage?

Well I don't know how you guys don't get any savings from LED, maybe I just hit a sweetspot between my LED unit and tank size combination. I have saved around R14000 in 2,5 years due to electricity and bulb replacement. Of that amount R12000 is electricity alone.

    Not really saving electricity wise.

On my tank, I got 6 Radion units at 135W each, total 810W

With T5, I would have used 2 T5 54W units with 6 tubes each. So 648W. If 8 tubes each, would be 864W

so not really a big difference in power consumption.

One "hidden" advantage is that I do not need any chiller. 2 PC fans are able to keep the tank under 25.5, even now in January. That saves a lot of power not needing a chiller.

Then it is the globe replacement costs. Even if quality globes can be pushed to a year. that would still be either 12 or 16 tubes at above R400 a tube. That is R6400 per year. Or buy a globe every month.

But then again, the initial outlay cost on the LED is a lot more than T5.

T5 have a ballast which lowers the power factor so use more electricity even if they rated the same wattage. ( got to do with harmonic and all the rest)

I have used Radions for a year, vertex illumilux for 2-3 years and DIY for 18 months, all still work, but i prefer my 10 x 39w T5 unit any day

    LED Lifespan

I switched from MH/T5 combos to LEDs and T5 combo's about 18 months ago and essentially my entire reef collapsed. Im not saying that its the LED's fault but more mine for underspecing the LED coverage required.

Now, back on topic.. My two 90w intellisun LED units only lasted about 1 year each before the issues started and straight forward replacement is no longer an option (this is a long story that I cannot post on this thread).

I just took the plunge and purchased 2 x Zetlight ZT6600 from jungle aquatics because I cannot see myself going back to only T5's or MH's.

I really enjoy the shimmer of LED's without the heat of Mh's and paying for Eskom to survive just p's me off :tt2:
