but we know Bmw has better build quality and are sportier cars while merc is old mans car bur very reliable hence why Audi(vw beatle) does not even try and compete with the big boys

What I understand is that Cree got a higher PAR output and is much stronger than Bridgelux leds... but then there is also Luxeon ES 3watt leds that is even better than the Cree leds...

perhaps we need to establish what the criteria is of a good LED?

    par
    wattage
    lumen output

is there more? im just trying to get some direction here :)

I probably can shed some light on this as I have the options to use bridgelux/Epistar and Cree LEDs on otherwise identical units.

Price wise the same 600mm CREE unit costs the same as the 900mm Bridgelux unit.

Besides the price difference IMO there is a MARKED difference in the CREE vs Bridgelux. Its clearly visible in the penetration, shimmer and visible intensity.

its very easy looking directly into a fully illuminated bridgelux LED, try this with a CREE, and you are blinded for about 10s.

We use the CREE units on our coral tanks and the bridgelux units on our tanks holding fish.

That's just a very layman's terms of experience. No par/pur meter to test in more detail.

I think a lot of it has to do with the optics/lenses and spread/grouping of the LED's.

LED`s perform better without optics and last much longer... see www.stevesleds.com

I can't shed much light on the subject. But I don't use optics on my cree leds. Running them at the lowest intensity possible with my controller and still can't look at them.

What is bright to the human eye might not be what is good for corals.

I believe a PAR reader should be used as a test under a single LED from each make, all 3W, all same K rating. To see what is really the difference.

ok, my experience, @butherman and I both have DIY units, mine are bridgelux and his cree...
while the same colours etc, its the strength, i run at 80%-100% and he runs at 40-60% or so...

i went bridgelux for cost as i got 160 leds and would rather run more at 80% then fewer at 50%
i run all mine unlensed and have a 400x200 unit covering 800x800 area with 40leds on with all my clams etc

    its choice and preference really

the best way is to run more leds at 2w and they peak and last longer :)

So then would we not get even more longivety out of it the Cree unit running at 40/50% that would be app 1.5w?
