Reefers there are some good quality affordable LED units reaching our shores.

Its now become more like buying a house or car??? My worst nightmare.

For the new/old reefer wanting to convert or enter the market with LEDs it must be a mine field. There are so many positives and negatives, pros and cons, varying experiences and units having more functionality than others. We are here to help you make the best cost effective decision to a lighting prospective into your life long hobby.

All of us bringing you products strive to bring you the best, but obviously cost vs performance opens up debate and this is what us techi reefers love.

Without a doubt you do have a great LED range to choose from and kudos to all sponsors, wholesales and retailers making this possible in the SA reef keeping community.

Lets keep this thread an open one, open minded and let us, the wee bit more experienced try our best to guide you in the best way possible.

Hope this is a good gesture and does not go way down south.

My last statement is always, Mods you have the last say what happens publically.

    Enjoy ....

OK. Just a repeat on what I said.

For me, without access to fancy light testing equipment. The only method I have to be able to compare light units is to look at their wattage rates. Obviously it is unfair to both products if you compare a 200W unit to a 36W unit. I know that just using the wattage is not 100% correct method to compare units, as the make of the LED, lenses cluster density and a whole lot of other factors also have their place in the equation.

Spread is also a very important factor, don't want to hang the unit 1m above the tank just to illuminate the whole tank

Very nice spreadsheet. Remote looks a bit low tech like my own led fixture. Rest of the light looks awesome. 200w

Did you buy one? Where, when, how much?

Thanks for the thread, i posted something similar under the general section
and i am sure many of us who are wanting to swap over to LEDs are confused as to what to buy

everyone seems to have different opinions as to which is better and there is no consensus

so hopefully this thread will help us in the right direction

My opinion .... theres more to reefing than LEDs. Sponsors need to stop focusing all their attention on lighting. When last was there a new product advertised that wasnt another boring led unit?

@459b. Personally i think focus on leds is because lighting is one of the most important aspects of the reef tank. The other being flow.
Sponsors will always focus on these two, as no reef tank can survive without thm.
All the other hardware is just optional extras to make life easier for us

Lighitng is nothing if your basic water parameters are out. Like many others, I run my tank in T5's an my tank inhabitants are thriving.
I've been in this hobby for a while and find all the led stuff confusing. What must a newcomer feel?
