I was thinking - why not just use a car or truck battery?

What I learned is, automotive batteries are optimised for delivering lotsa starting amps over a short period (lots of thin plates in them), whereas deep cycle batteries are designed for long load periods cranking few amps (less, but thicker, plates). Using a car bat as a deep cycle bat will destroy it eventually.

However, there's something I learned which raised some questions which aren't answered. According to the wiki entry, DCB's last longest (in terms of service lifespan) when kept at around 50% charge.

My question is, does anybody optimise their batteries this way, and does it even make sense to do so (since you wanted the largest margin of safety possible).

Also, assuming you wanna be able to deliver those amps reliably but also make your (non-cheap) DCBs last, does it make sense to connect two or more in parallel and somehow keep them at 50% charge?

    Thanks!

You should keep them fully charged but not discharge them to below 50% to increase their lifespan. (Deep Cycle)

Car batteries can be discharged many many times but not very low. 50% discharges would kill a car battery quickly.
