Ok, so do we have any Latin / Greek bofs here that can help us with pronounciations..
So many times we hear different prounounciations of the latin names and hell some of those words just look damn scary...

For example I always used to say Aiptaisia as Ape - Tay - Zee - A

I was corrected and told that the P is silent and should be prounounced A - tay - Zee - A

Here are some general Rules for prounouciations that I found on another forum:
Vowels
Short
a as in again
e as in met
i as in hint
o as in offer
u as in foot
Long
a as in father
e as in gate
i as in eat
o as in open
u as in food
y like the French u
Dipthongs
ae as in kite
au as in out
ei as in stray
oe as in coil
Consonants
c as in car
g as in gate
j as in yet
r trilled
s as in sign
t pronounced without aspiration
v as in win
bs as in apse
bt as in apt
ch as in chaotic
ph as in top heavy
th as in take

That would mean that I pronounce Crocea wrong as well - if C is always hard then it should be
Croak - kee - a I say Cro - see - a

are you bored anthony?

Excellent thread, so Chaeto is not Cheet - o but it should be keet - o - morpha.

I always feel like a prize twat when talking to guys like millepora.

Yip spot Dean. Keet - O - morpha would be right.

That's another one I get wrong..

are you bored anthony?

Ok here is one that is often mis prounounced..

Zooxanthellae - Often said as Zoo - an - the - lay

Should be

Zoo - Zan - The - Lay :)

Anthony, Julian Sprung's book on Corals and Inverts also covers the proper pronounciation of the various species.

Pronounciation of the latin names is always going to be cause for debate...even speaking to experts in a particular group of animals you get a range of opinions about what the proper pronounciation is. What also contributes to teh debate is that many of the latin names are latinised english/german etc names. I am happy with most pronounciations as long as there is no misunderstanding about which animal you are talking about!

i was actually amazed at the pronounciation of acro - pora ,where its A-cropora, after watching the documentery "Equator"
watched it aswell, i also realised they prenounced alot of words differently
