    Hi guys.

My local Provincial Council is looking at setting up a web site, so I need some info on setting up costs. To give some info on the PC, we look after the affairs of dog dome in KZN, so they are looking at having a web site so that people can go to a see what is happening and what has happened in KZN.
    So the costs are:
    Registering Name
    Web site space
If some body can help setup design etc.
Don know what other cost their will be.

What would be nice is if we will be able to do some basic updates to keep the site updated.

    -Registering Name
If they are wanting an org.za domain it would probably cost around R300
    -Web site space
I do this at R600/yr. Most other hosts would be around the same price.
-If some body can help setup design etc.
I could help I guess. I'm not much of a designed but have lots of experience/knowledge with the technical stuff
-Don know what other cost their will be.
People to update the site like news etc? Marketing?
Should really be too many extra costs but obviously this all depends greatly on what they want.

Thx Rory. What size space are we looking at for that price?

Do you know the pitfalls for these free web site hosting guys.

Hi Shaun - I pay for my web hosting, R39 per month.... At Paradigm Solutions. I get 50MB web-space, and 5000GB data transfer per month.....

Regarding the "free web hosting" - the pitfalls is that there's ALWAYS advertising, and popups..... and sometimes your "website" just "dissappears"..... Happened to me before :(

    Hi Shaun.
I usually start people off with 1GB of space and 10GB of transfer. So far only 1 person has ever needed more...

I would say stay 100% away from free hosting. It is basically always rubbish... The only "free hosting" which would be fairly decent would be "google pages" and "synthasite" (a cape town company) - they've just changed their name, can't remember to what though. They let you set up a free site and make it easy to edit it etc and they're great for people new to the web etc but they become very limiting after the first 2 minutes...

Thx will give them all the pricing.

Just need to find pricing on helping setup the site as I don't have a creative bone in my body.

I have used MS Frontpage before what are the current Programs used and are their any good free ones available, as my frontpage is about 7 years old.

Please don't use Frontpage... I beg you :p Seriously the code it produces is really terrible.

To add to Warr's suggestions google "Joomla" and "Drupal", probably the 2 most popular open source CMS's. Basically you can browse through all the free themes, customise it a bit and then set up users who can log in and edit pages - similar to how you edit a post on here.

Yeah I find Joomla far too confusing so my personal preference is Drupal but even that could be easier...

Cool, why would you need any tech support then? :p Hosting's even easier cos everything is set up. A lot of hosting will even come with a control panel where you can just select joomla, a location to put it and click install and it does it all for you...

Have been trying the other program Drupal, but have not been able to install it yet:( It does not come with a nice installation manual like joomla did.

PS the tech support is needed to setup a nice looking easy to maintain web site:p

What is with the org.za is it just a once off payment not like the co.za that is yearly?

    No it is also yearly...

If you can prove you're non-profit then the fee is waived.
