It's that time of year where I take a break from Jozi and venture out to new lands. This year my family have dicided to visit the land of King Shaka (and visit uShaka too).
So why am I posting this thread, who cares you ask?

Is there anyone that is keen to lend me their portable air pump, will be collecting some nerita snails and maybe some yellow tipped hermits (FOR MY OWN TANKS, stay within the law), I will certainly pay a deposit for the use of it, just in case it falls into the wrong hands.;) Please PM me.
    Carlos

Sounds cool and you'll be able to help me with ID, won't come through every day. Was planning on changing water (taking temp into consideration) everyday and then using pump for trip back up. Will PM you my number.

The battery operated pumps last longer than you think. Can go between Durbs and Jozi 3 times before they are flat.

    And they are cheap.

Nerita snails are cool. Just do not take the white ones, they do and will climb out.
Topshells also, if you can find them.

Just make sure about the hermits. Double check that it is not a snail. Some shells the hermits like is the Muricidae family, and those snails are predators. Also double check that you do not pick up the Blue eyed hermit. Easy to spot with the bigger white left claw. Nothing wrong with them, they just tend to grow a bit bigger and can bump things off.

Collect some nice empty shells as well. Your hermits always needs some bigger shell. collect the same empty shells as what you find the hermits in. at least then you know they will take to it.

Thanks @RiaanP, definitely don't want to bring some unwanted critters back. Also looking for a local book on marine life in intertidal zones, especially one that deals with inverts, any suggestions?

I got a nice beginner book. Cover basically all the basics, but do not have all in detail. But at least you will get the idea and family.

Ok, I am set, have my pump, my book, my polystyrene box, going to get my permit. @RiaanP can I get the permit here in Jozi and is it a general fishing/capture permit, anything else you guys can think off?

mmmm .... Only snails and hermits .... No no no ... This part of the year you bound to find lots of interrsting stuff down there ... Check in with Umhlanga, Ballito, Sheffield Beach as well ... All close to Umdloti .... My advice to you also is a polybox might be a wee bit too less for for the treasures down at the coast ..... Together with excellent advice given above try keep collecting hermits till last and if possible seperate from other livestock on the road trip or you might find them attacking like the snails in a confined space .... I would also suggest Black Adders generous offer till home time. ..... One last tip .... Get yourself a utility box larger than your poly box ... The last thing you want is spillage on the way back home, so keep all your containers in this box so if anything spills it it contained in the box and not leaving a trail from the coast back home .... Oh yeah ... The snorkel lagoon at uShaka is a must, but be warned, once you done that and go back home then you might be tempted to upgrade your tank and re live the experience ... At the post office just enquire about the appropriate permit for collecting marine specimens ... Same form but different options

    yip, any post office.
    one tick for snails,
    another for fish
    do both
    and get the year license
Each tick is about 80 bucks.

Snorkelling at uShaka? That's like going to a brothel and bringing a blow up doll. Vetchies is right there next to uShaka and it's free. Do the real thing! :p
