koi filter sand safe not safe?

play sand is better than filter sand.
Filter sand tends to have sharper edges.

If it's just Silica sand then it should be fine as it's inert, same as playsand just a larger particle size. Double check there is nothing added to it and that it is just pure silica sand, if it is then give it a good wash and you should be fine.

I won't take a chance with it because i have sharks and wouldn't want it cutting them.

yip, filter sand is a bit too rough for certain fish like sand sifting gobies and wrasses that sleep in the substrate.
