    Hi Guys,

To stem a Asteria starfish outbreak I purchased a Harlequin shrimp a couple of weeks ago...

It turns out being a rather effective: it caught my Sand Sifter.

A bit of belated googling turned up an interesting clip:

Do I leave the Sifter in the tank for later consumption?

    Thanks
    Fanie

Leave it in. He will consume the whole starfish.

    Seriouly impressive killer.

Has anybody every been able to get their harlequin to eat other food except star fish?
I would love to get one, but I don't like the idea of having to star fish for it to eat all the time.

In that video clip he wasnt lying when he said that they are REALLY effective at eating asternia stars.

I must have had hundreds in my smaller tank and in a few weeks he decimated the star population to the point I have to find him food elsewhere now....

    I had 2 harlequins.

Had so many asterina starfish, that they ate my cheato ball up. The shrimps ate the starfish up in 4 weeks. Sold the pair eventually.

Now my starfish population levels are back. Bought one harlequin shrimp this time, hope he will be slower on his own.

Your LFS should've asked if you had other star fish. Harlequins ONLY eat star fish. Sorry for your loss.
I have read many threads on other forums where guys buy crown of thorns star fish or linkias and put them in their sumps and "harvest" their arms for food (a barbaric practice, in my opinion). They then keep the star fish well fed so that their arms regenerate.
