    Hi Guys

Let me start changed salt brand from RedSea Coral Pro to Seachem from that time I battle with the upkeep of MAG and KH and it droped bad. Dose MAG everyday small amounts with seachem advantage mag. I dose Alkalin 8.3 every other day but kh drop within 2 days. Drip kalk 24/7 in RO holding tank that I use for topup. So kan someone please tell me what's going on. Tested KH yesterday morning 8.4 test KH this morning 7.7 Salifert new testkit. O and MAG new testkit. Test MAG yesterday 1200 dose 60g of advantage MAG and today MAG level at 1170 how's this possible to drop that bad within a day

This is my water par at the moment

    PH - 8.3
    KH - 7.7
    MAG - 1170
    NO2 - 0
    NO3 - 0

    Corals 85% SPS

I stopped dosing need to find the problem

    Thanks in advance
    Charl

@charlv you need to test your Ca. Remember that alk, Ca and Mg are all linked so a problem in one my just be a symptom of a problem in another parameter. So its possible that the problem is with your Ca

@charlv you should dose alk daily. Thats the most important to keep stable

personally kalk did nothing for my system so I stopped it. I dose 2 teaspoons of sodium carbonate in the morning and in the night and that keeps my alk stable.

My parameters used to fluctuate all the time when I used to rely on kalk to maintain. Have you tried tropic marin bio calcium. Heard its really good and it maintains alk, ca and mg

My tank is running 2 and a half years on kalk never had a problem. Like I said the problem started when I changed from redsea to seachem then I started to dose MAG ALK to get levels up again in new saltmix when I do water changes. I'm running NEOMAG in a reactor aswell and no change.

Seachem is high in calcium apparently and this will cause your alk to go down.

I have also been using red sea coral pro, I must say its a very good salt with all the parameters bein pretty high. Lately I have been hearing some kak about seachem salt, not sure if its all true or what, but it was enough to get me to cancel my order for a bucket of salt (I get scared quick like that lol).. Perhaps sell your salt and go back to red sea. You were happy when you were using the red sea salt

Not sure either personally i don't think that the manufacturers will put something like that on the shelf knowing that it could influence our parameters like that..but i am tagging along..

Something about borate alk springs to mind, especially with seachem salt.

Not sure on your system details, but that kind of alk and mg drop is not unheard of in a sps dominated system.

Consider that your additions might be counterproductive too. Its not just caco3 which will precipitate, but all types of carbonates, including Mg and Sr.

I struggled to keep it up and stable with kalk top up, combined with ca reactor with ARM and dolomite, but then again I had a few too many sticks for a realistic comparison.

What is your RO pH prior to kalk addition?

    Thanks for the replies guys

Alk very low on my seachem batch plus mag
Need to dose mag and alk everytime I make a new water mix

Yeh I think that's my problem aswell to many sticks. I think I will get a dose pump to control Mag and alk

I run this in my tank now for a week no mag change push 1000l/h through reator. Must this stuff tumble or what. Google it but there's nothing on NeoMag.

Not familiar with the product. I assume its some kind of high magnesium carbonate? Are you running it at a redued pH or just water flowing through it?

Quite a load of sps for that volume, but depletion would be dependant on growth too. Also remember that acidifying processes, suck up al, and it seems like you have quite a bioload, tank dimensions / volume (total system)
